The Ugliest Cake Ever

This is the cake I ordered from Baskin Robbins in Louisa, Ky for Gage's B-Day Party. Isn't it lovely. Very nicely decorated. Somebody spent some time on this cake, that is for sure. This is the cake we wanted.
This is the cake we got. Isn't it ugly. Just about the ugliest cake I have ever seen from a professional so-called cake decorator.

I am not sure if you can tell from the pictures but the cake was leaning and just about to fall over, and it was leaning before the 15-minute trip home. I kinda suspected this would happen. When I placed the order the girl kept asking, "Does the spider have to be on the side or can I put it on the top." I told her that did not matter, and she proceeded to tell me some lady freaked out over the spider not being on the side. I got a little worried at that point. Next thing you know the phone is ringing again, and the girl says she is the cake decorator and she is not going to be working on Saturday so she will have to get 1 of the other employees to decorate the cake. My instinct told me to just forget about the cake, but I thought surely since they all work there they can decorate this cake. And she also says she will have to charge extra for the spiders since the girl can definitely not do the spiders on the cake. I got another sickening feeling. I told her I had my own plastic spiders and I would not pay extra for spiders, again she said okay. I worked all day Saturday and Darrell picked the cake up. He was more concerned about the size and said just let it be. Let it be, this cake was 39.99, and she did put the spiders on there and not charge extra for them, probably trying to soothe over the fact the cake looks like a crap. Yep, I said it, crap. She even said the candy corn would be on the roof, well no candy corn. I have emailed Baskin Robbins about this cake, and today, I am posting it to the Cake Wrecks blog. I sure hope she accepts it. Please accept it. It deserves to be there.

UPDATE: I had to add this. Ice cream and cake start at only 9.99, what for like 2 scoops. My cake was 39.99.

  1. I so hate when bakeries do that. Don't advertise one thing and then provide another. We had that happen with my daughters Cindrella cake. So glad you submitted this to Cake Wrecks!

  4. That is so sad...I inquired about a cake at our LOVELY Baskins Robbins in Louisa for my FiL's Birthday in September. They priced a cake at 39.99, and it would only feed 10 people, we expected 20-40. I went to Food City and Got 2 Friendly's Ice Cream cakes for 30 Dollars, and they fed the 35 people who were there, and we had leftovers. (the necklace and bracelet are beautiful by the way!)

  5. Hey Teresa! My name is Chris and I'm the GM of a couple BR franchises in South Carolina. I just wanted to tell you that while you had a bad experience at your local BR, it is not the standard that most stores (including your local one, I'm sure) hold themselves to. We take A LOT of pride in the custom cakes we do at my stores, and although I can't speak for other franchisees, I'm sure the sentiment is the same. Also, please remember that a custom built BR cake is a high-end quality product that is not mass produced, unlike what is normally found at your local grocery store. We do offer cakes at $9.99 (not the house cake, unfortunately) such as the Brownie and Apple Pie a la Modes (awesome products!) which will feed up to 10 people. I'm very sorry about your experience and I hope that it doesn't turn you off to our products altogether. Thanks!

  6. Chris, tried to comment you back but could not. They are offering a 45 gift card for this cake. I agree, Baskin Robbins do normally have good cakes, and I have gotten cakes, not at this particular location, but at another 1 and it looked exactly like the picture. If they know they cannot make the cake to look like what it is supposed to, just say so.

  7. Teresa,

I agree with you for the most part. I do think that you should have been alerted if they thought they couldn't make the cake. However, the person who made it might have been just doing what they were told by their manager or decorator and didn't realize that they were way out of their skill level (..obviously..). In the event something goes wrong with a cake (or it just turns out plain ugly..like your case) sometimes its better to give the customer something rather than having them show up and tell them its not ready/messed up, etc. Maybe a discount should have been given on it at the register, or your choice of a cake out of the display. I can tell you that from start to finish that house cake should take between 2-4 hours to make depending on freezer/store temperatures, number of cakes due, and whether or not they have a dedicated decorator. I also can't speak for the pricing strategies or economic situations for other stores, but I charge $28.99 for the haunted house/christmas cottage cakes.
